HKC launches new Mianyang direct-view LED fab, eyes microLED expansion in 2026

Chinese display maker HKC announced that its new direct-view LED fab in Mianyang is starting operation. The company says that this is a significant milestone for the company and its long-term strategy in the large-area display industry sector.

It is our understanding that currently the new fab will produce LED direct view displays that utilize miniLEDs, but in the future it will also produce microLEDs. In fact, HKC announced that "in the face of the rapid growth of the global MicroLED technology market" it will expand the microLED capacity in 2026. In the long-term its main application targets for its direct-view LED displays are commercial screens, home theaters, and automotive displays.

Ford to install a large 19-meters microLED display at its new campus headquarters

The Ford Motor Company is moving its world headquarters, after almost 70 years. The company is now construction of the new 2.1 million-square-foot headquarters, at Greenfield Village, and it hopes it will be all completed by 2027.

Ford says that the new headquarters will house 6 confidential Design Studios and a central Design Showroom with 10 vehicle turntables and a 64-foot (19.5 meters) microLED screen, allowing for full product reviews in a single space. This will be one of the largest microLED displays in the world.

LG Electronics to collaborate with LG Display and bring LTPS tiled microLED signage displays to market

LG Electronics has been producing tiled microLED displays (branded as MAGNIT displays) for many years, utilizing its own technology based on PCB backplanes.

LG Display has been developing its own tiled microLED technologies, and it is now reported that the two companies are collaborating to bring LTPS-based microLED tiles to LG Electronics' signage. This is not a surprise, as in general we see a shift from PCB backplanes to LTPS backplanes for large-area signage microLED displays, as these offer higher performance, and a simplified circuit design.

Does it make sense for AUO and Innolux to merge to accelerate their microLED development?

Most companies in the display industry believe that microLED is the leading next-generation display technology, that will be able to replace LCDs and OLEDs in many applications. MicroLEDs offers many advantages – both technical such as higher durability and higher brightness and efficiency, but also in unique production processes and models.

The two leading Taiwanese display makers, AUO and Innolux, have been pushing forward aggressively with their microLED projects. This is mainly due to the fact that both companies do not have any real OLED projects, which means that it is easier for them to develop microLEDs as their next-generation technology. MicroLEDs could provide a way for both AUO and Innolux to “leapfrog” over OLED technology.

Against this backdrop, a potential merger between AUO and Innolux presents an intriguing strategic opportunity. By combining their technological expertise, manufacturing capabilities, and financial resources, a merged entity could potentially accelerate microLED development, and perhaps also receiving meaningful financial support from the Taiwanese government, as such as move could strengthen Taiwan's position in the global display industry.

Note that we have no indications that such a merger is even considered by the two companies, but we feel this is a fascinating topic that should be explored and is supported by several strong arguments.

Nanolumens signs an agreement with AUO Display Plus to co-develop microLED large-format displays

LED screen designer and producer Nanolumens announces a strategic partnership with AUO Display Plus, to co-develop microLED large-format displays.

Nanolumens says that together with AUO, it will deliver advanced solutions for markets such as transportation, enterprise, retail, public art and cultural institutions. The two companies will showcase first prototypes next month.

LG installs seven MAGNIT microLED displays at the Dallas Cowboy stadium

LG Business Solutions, the “Official Display Partner of the Dallas Cowboys”, announced that it has completed the installation of seven MAGNIT microLED displays at the Dallas Cowboy's AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. 

The microLED displays have been installed in the newly renovated Bank of America Founders Club. There's a single 4.88 x 2.44 meters display, two 1.22 x 1.22 meters displays (these are LG's 1.2 mm LSAB012 displays), and two 1.83 x 1.83 meters displays (these are LG's 0.9 mm LSAB009 displays). The premium suites at the stadium also installed LG's OLED TVs

Konka shows a massive 310" 4K-Plus microLED display

At CES 2024, Konka is demonstrating a massive 310" microLED display. The display offers 4K-Plus resolution (Konka did not detail the exact resolution), low reflectivity (<5%), 800 nits of brightness, high refresh rate (not detailed) and a large color gamut (85% BT.2020).

Konka says that this display uses the company's self developed and fully proprietary microLED chips. Konka produces its microLED chips using Aixtron's MOCVD systems.
