Avantama and Scrona collaborate to show how perovskite QDs can be inkjet printed on microLEDs using EHD

Scrona, developer of high-precision electrohydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet print heads joined forces with Avantama, developer and manufacturer of high-tech materials for electronics, and have successfully processed high-performance perovskite quantum dot (QD) ink using Scrona's EHD inkjet printing.

The two companies specifically target microLED displays with this development, as depositing QDs on microLEDs requires extremely high precision. They have demonstrated that an OD greater than 1 can be obtained with a perovskite QD layer thickness below 2µm. This can reduce the printhead nozzle count by a factor of five (compared to current non-EHD inkjet solutions) and deliver a thin QD layer that improves the overall efficiency and production tact time of MicroLED display technology.

Oxford Instruments installs its 200 mm ALD passivation tool at a UK-based microLED microdisplay developer

UK-based Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology announced that it has installed one of its 200 mm atomic layer deposition (ALD) passivation systems at a UK microLED provider, in order to support the customer's latest AR microdisplay development and production. The OIPT system is used to deposit high-K dielectric ultra-thin films for high-density, very high-brightness, low-power and high frame-rate RGB pixel arrays.

OIPT says that its low-damage plasma ALD technology is optimized for smaller dies with smaller active areas, and was shown in some cases by its customers at ICNS to double external quantum efficiency.

iBeam Materials' founder gives us the latest updates and his views on the microLED industry, towards his upcoming talk at MicroLED-Connect

US-based iBeam Materials develops a technology that uses ion-beam to grow microLED devices on a variety of large-area substrates, including thin, flexible large-area metal foils. iBeam's founder and president, Vladimir Matias, will give a talk at the upcoming MicroLED-Connect startup showcase event on February 2024, and he was kind enough to send us a short update on the company's technology and status, and his views on the microLED industry and market.

Hello Vladimir, thank you for your time. Can you tell us a bit about iBeam, your technology and current status?

iBeam Materials is an early stage technology company developing a revolutionary approach to the epitaxial semiconductor growth process required for making LEDs and microLEDs such as in the next generation of displays. Instead of GaN crystal growth on expensive, rigid single crystal substrates that are limited in size, iBeam technology allows growth of the same high-quality semiconductor material on large-area, low-cost metal foil that permits roll-to-roll processing due to its flexibility.

Continental shows a 10" microLED automotive display embedded in a crystal housing

Continental demonstrated its first microLED automotive display prototype. The so-called CrystalCenter Display is based on a 10" microLED display, that is housed inside a crystal housing, developed in collaboration with Swarovski. The company says that this display offers a stylish frameless and semi-transparent look.

Continental says it chose a microLED display for this project, as its offers much greater brightness compared to other display technologies. Continental did not detail any commercialization plans for such a display - and it's likely that there are no such plans in the near future.
