MicroLED displays are very attractive for automotive applications, as they enable thin, highly efficient, bright, flexible and long-lasting displays. The automotive market is capable of adopting premium display technologies, and so is one of the key target markets for many microLED displays developers.

Continental Swarovski CrystalCenter Display prototype

Many companies have demonstrated automotive microLED display prototypes over the past years - for example AUO in 2023 showed a 16.1" automotive transparent microLED that is a 'blended' display - one that is hidden into the dashboard when not in use. In early 2024, the company showed a transparent microLED automotive display that is embedded inside windows. In 2024, Innolux also unveiled a new microLED automotive display prototype - in fact a complete instrument cluster display made from microLED panels. Continental demonstrated a 10" microLED display embedded inside a crystal housing, developed in collaboration with Swarovski.

MicroLED automotive displays are highly promising - but it is likely to take years before the technology would reach actual production.

AU Optronics sees Micro-LED displays entering the market in the next 1-2 years

AU Optronics president, Paul Peng, says that he expects Micro-LED displays to enter the market within 1-2 years. The first displays will be large-area signage and small-sized VR displays. Micro-LEDs for the automotive market will take longer to commercialize - around 5 years.

AUO recently demonstrated a 12.1" LTPS micro-LED display prototype that features a resolution of 1920x720 (169 PPI). AUO discloses that this display was produced using the company's self-developed transfer process that can move 50,000 - 60,000 LEDs per transfer (AUO did not detail the time it takes to perform a single transfer, though). AUO is now developing repair technology to take care of damaged LEDs.

PlayNitride raises $50 million, will start trial production of microLED chips by the end of August 2019

Digitimes reports that PlayNitride raised $50 million and is ready to start trial production of micro-LED chips by the end of August 2019. PlayNitride will increase its headcount by 100 employees.

PlayNitride told Digitimes that it achieved a yield rate of 99.9% in its LED transfer (pick-and-place) process. Using mass repair technologies, the company is certain it can achieve commercial viability of its process. The company's mass transfer speed is 10,000 chips per second. This means that for a Full-HD (1920x1080) display it will take just over 10 minutes to transfer the LED chips. A 4K display will take just over 40 minutes.

Tianma's 7.56" transparent Micro-LED prototypes developed in partnership with PlayNitride

Earlier this week China-based Tianma unveiled a new 7.56" 720x480 (114 PPI) transparent Micro-LED display prototype at SID, and the display won SID's people's choice award - the best new display technology.

Tianma 7.56'' transparent micro-led prototype (SID 2019 award)

Tianma today revealed that the Micro-LED prototype was co-developed with Taiwan's PlayNitride. In 2017 PlayNitride started to sample micro-LED panels and shipped samples to 10-20 potential customers. The company's chairman and CEO, Charles Li, said in June 2018 that 5-6 of these customers are continuing the developing of micro-LED modules based on these panels. Apparently TianMa is one of these customers.

Tianma developed a 7.56" highly transparent Micro-LED display

China-based Tianma announced that it has developed a transparent 7.56" 720x480 (114 PPI) Micro-LED display. The new display, which will be demonstrated at SID next week features a transparency of over 60%.

Tianma says that the new display has an ultra-thin border of less than 0.8 mm (left and right). Tianma says that such durable and long-lasting transparent displays could be very suitable for automotive applications (such as HUDs or in-window displays).

N-Tech Research: Micro-LED lighting revenues to reach $1.4 billion by 2028

n-tech Research says that the Micro-LED lighting will experience very fast growth, with revenues exceeding $1.4 billion by 2028 with 170 million lighting units shipped.

MicroLED lighting forecast (2019-2026, N-Tech)

n-tech says that some industry analysts say that micro-LED lighting will always remain a tiny niche and only cater for novelty lighting. n-tech, however, sees several advantages of micro-LEDs compared to conventional HB LEDs and expect that these will be enough to earn micro-LEDs a healthy share of the LED lighting market.
