Rayleigh Vision's CEO gives us the latest updates and his views on the microLED industry, towards his upcoming talk at MicroLED-Connect

Rayleigh Vision was established in 2023 in Hong Kong, to developed stacked microLED microdisplay technologies. The company's technology enables the stacking of LEDs on top of each other, to create high-density displays. The company's founder and CEO, Prof. Jr-Hau HE, will give a talk at the upcoming MicroLED-Connect startup showcase event on February 2024, and was kind enough to answer a few questions we had regarding the company's status, technology, and his views on the microLED industry and market.

Hello Prof. Jr-Hau, Can you tell us a bit your company, and technology, and your next steps?

Rayleigh Vision is a company that specializes in disruptive MicroLED technology, with a focus on solutions for full-color microdisplays. Our team includes pioneers in MicroLED technology, who have over a decade of experience in this field.

Although we've seen significant advancements in MicroLED technology, challenges remain. These include developing a full-color solution for microdisplays, improving mass transfer efficiency, and enhancing process yields. From the perspective of microdisplays, achieving a full-color display with a high Field of View (FOV) and Pixels per Degree (PPD) is crucial for an immersive Extended Reality (XR) experience. However, no product currently on the market meets these specifications.

Samsung Semiconductors to take over Samsung's microLED microdisplay development

According to new reports from Korea, Samsung Electronics decided that from now on, Samsung Display will handle all OLED microdisplay projects, while Samsung Semiconductor (SSI, or specifically, the Compound Semiconductor Solutions team) will handle all microLED microdisplay development.

Samsung sees OLED microdisplays as the solution of choice for next-generation VR headsets, such as Apple's Vision Pro (that uses 1.4" 4K OLED microdisplays made by Sony), while microLEDs will power the more demanding AR applications.

KAIST researchers develop a universal selective transfer process via micro-vacuum force

Researchers from Korea's KAIST institute developed a new microLED selective mass transfer process based on micro-vacuum force. The researchers brand their technology as micro-vacuum assisted selective transfer printing (µVAST), and say that it can be used to transfer a large number of microLEDs by adjusting the micro-vacuum suction force.

The process starts by forming small (20 micron, in the researchers demonstration device) holes on glass substrates using fast (7000 holes-per second) laser-induced etching (LIE). The LIE-drilled glass substrate is then connected to vacuum channels, which are controlled for selectively picking up, and the releasing, microLED devices.

The MicroLED Industry Association publishes its first microLED industry roadmap document

The MicroLED Industry Association has published its first MicroLED Industry Roadmap and State-of-the-Industry document. 

The 2024 MicroLED Roadmap covers the latest microLED technology trends, details the MicroLED Association’s roadmap and projections for the future of the microLED industry and market, by application segments. The summary edition can be downloaded here.

Foxconn and Porotech to co-develop microLED microdisplays

Foxconn announced a strategic partnership with Porotech to co-develop microLED microdisplays, targeting AR, wearable and other applications.

Foxconn says that this partnership will utilize Porotech's Dynamic Pixel Tuning color-tunable GaN-on-Silicon microLED technology and Foxconn's technologies in semiconductor wafer manufacturing, packaging, IC drivers, CMOS backplanes, module assembly and system assembly.

MicroLED-Connect is a hybrid event series, a year-long program of virtual and onsite events, all focused on the microLED industry. The flagship MicroLED Connect display conference will take place in Europe in 2024 (Eindhoven, September 24-26).

MicroLED Connect posted a call-out to potential speakers for the event. Companies, research institutes, start-ups, analysts, and academics are all welcome to propose a talk. We encourage contributions from round the world. In general, we prefer talks which represent state-of-the-art technologies or real commercial and industrial impact.

Researchers succesfully grow GaN microLED arrays on a flexible graphene substrate

Researchers from Korea's Seoul National University and Sungkyunkwan University developed a method to grow GaN LED arrays on a flexible graphene layer. The so-called microdisks arrays exhibit excellent crystallinity with a uniform in-plane orientation and strong blue light emission. 

The researchers grew the GaN microdisks on a graphene layer (grown on a sapphire substrate) covered with a micro-patterned SiO2 mask using metal–organic vapor-phase epitaxy. The microdisks were then processed into micro-LEDs and then successfully transferred onto bendable substrates.

Meizu announces the microLED microdisplays powered MYVU Discovery AR glasses

Meizu announced the MYVU Discovery AR glasses, said to be the world’s lightest mass-produced full-color AR glasses.

The MYVU Discovery AR use a 0.4 sqcm light-engine based on three monochrome microLED microdisplays - these are JBD's 0.13" VGA displays - and the engine is likely similar to Vuzix's display engine based also on JBD's displays. The MYVU also uses the world's first mass-produced resin optical waveguide lens.

MicroLED Connect concludes a successful first virtual event

MicroLED-Connect is a hybrid event series, a year-long program of virtual and onsite events, all focused on the microLED industry. The first event took place last month, a 2-day virtual event that will be focused on microLED (and also miniLED) technologies. Over 25 speakers, including leading companies, researchers and market analysts, gave excellent talks.

The event offered a single track, so that the 120+ event participants could listen to all the talks, and also participate in online networking sessions. If you missed the event, you'll be happy to know that all the sessions were uploaded online, and can be accessed with a MicroLED-Connect yearly pass. Here in this post we share samples of two of the talks (only the first few minutes).
