Company Type:

Polar Light Technologies logoPolar Light Technologies is a Swedish microLED company spun out of Linköping University. The company has developed a proprietary bottom-up manufacturing technology in which pyramidal InGaN/GaN microLEDs are grown directly by MOCVD, instead of being defined through conventional etching.

PLT says that its bottom-up approach avoids the sidewall damage and efficiency losses associated with etched microLEDs, particularly as pixel dimensions are reduced, and so provides a route to highly efficient, densely integrated microLED arrays and monolithic multi-colour devices.

Polar Light Technologies develops microLED components, display modules and development platforms for microdisplays, optical systems and larger-area display applications.

In 2026, the company raised over 5 million Euro as it gets ready to launch its first products. Also in 2026, the company produced a series of sub 500 nanometer InGaN LEDs, the smallest LEDs ever demonstrated.

Polar Light Technologies produces its first microLED array at its new VTT Pilot Line

Polar Light Technologies announced that it has produced its first MicroLEDs via its Pilot Line at VTT Technical Research Centre Finland. The company says that its process flow transfer from the laboratory to the VTT pilot line is ahead of schedule - "demonstrating the advantages of pyramidal MicroLEDs and selected area growth".

The next step for PLT is to focus on homogeneity, yield and the integration of the MicroLEDs to a CMOS backplane. The company's goal is to produce a complete microLED microdisplay in the pilot line, and towards that it will develop bonding and integration of the MicroLEDs frontplane onto the CMOS backplane.
