XDC developed the world's fastest display, says could create highly efficiency communication links

MicroLED technologies developer X Display Company (XDC) announced that it has developed the world's fastest display based on its microLED platform, with a data rate of a million frames per second.

XDC says that such a display could lay the foundation for next-generation free-space optical wireless communication systems. The basic idea is to pair a display such as this with a camera setup to create a cable-free, reconfigurable and energy-efficient display-camera communication link.

XDC did not share any technical details on its latest display, but it says that it has modeled the efficiency of such a setup, and it shows a roadmap for 2–3x improvement in power-per-bit (pJ/bit) compared to 800G optical transceivers. This kind of platform could also find use cases in applications such as LiFi, digital media broadcasting, visible light communication (VLC), vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) and energy-efficient optical compute.

In 2024, XDC announced that it has developed a new micro-IC driven microLED display in collaboration with Lumileds. Earlier in 2024 we have posted an interview with XDC's Executive VP of Operations & Equipment, to learn more about the company's technology and business.
