Westlake Smokey Mountain Technology (Yanshan Technology) has officially started operating its 8-inch GaN-on-Silicon microLED microdisplay production line, in Deqing, Zhejing, China. The company says this is the world's first 8-inch silicon microLED fab in operation.

The WSMT fab i s a full process line, that includes all steps from microLED epiwafer deposition to full display packaging. It currently operates on a small scale, but when fully operational it will have the annual capacity to produce 3 million microLED devices.
The company says that it introduces three novel technologies into the new line:
- Inverted trapezoidal three-sided reflective device structure to improve light extraction efficiency h
- iHgh-precision hybrid bonding technology, that achieves a 99.9999% (6N) connectivity and a near zero defect rate
- High-precision alignment of the CMOS and LED silicon wafers that enables a pixel density of over 20,000 PPI
The company says that it taps into mature silicon semiconductor production line technology and industry, it reduces production costs by over 50% compared to sapphire based production. The company's full color displays utilize its proprietary vertically-stacking technology.
