THEON and Kopin to co-develop microLED microdisplay technologies

Advanced optronics developer Theon announced that it is investing $15 million in Kopin Corporation. Part of that investment is a $8 million acquisition of a 49% stage in Kopin's Scottish subsidiary.

The Scottish Subsidiary will serve as a foundation for a new European joint venture between the two companies. This JV will engage in the development and production of microLED displays (in addition to the production and distribution of AR-enabled systems that the two companies will jointly develop).

Kopin has been engaged with microLED for quite some time. In 2024, Kopin announced a strategic agreement with MICLEDI to design, develop and produced advanced full-color microLED displays for AR applications. Earlier in 2023, Kopin announced that it has received the first verification samples of its microLED microdisplays, that utilize the company's proprietary backplane and drive technology. These displays achieved brightness levels of over 2.8 million nits.

In 2025, Kopin announced that it has been awarded a US army contract that involves a soldier display trade study to define the optimal MicroLED characteristics for XR HUDs for warfighter solutions.
