PlayNitride discusses its latest financials, starts shipping its tandem (stacked) microLED devices, develops a 0.13" microdisplay

Taiwan-based MicroLED developer PlayNitride held its Q1 2026 earnings call, during which CEO Charles Li detailed the company's progress on its tandem (stacked) microLED chips and its full-color monolithic microdisplays for AI glasses, and reaffirmed PlayNitride's position as the only vertically-integrated microLED maker that has mastered epitaxy, chip manufacturing and mass transfer in production. The company also shared its latest financial results.

The main technology highlight was PlayNitride's next-generation tandem stacked microLED microdisplay. Li said the architecture, which has been in development for around two years, started shipping to customers for use in end products in 2026, and delivers a 50% to 80% improvement in light efficiency. Li said that PlayNitride is currently the only company that can stably mass-produce these increasingly complex microLED devices.

Qiushui Semiconductor raises $30 million to build a 8-inch microLED microdisplay production line using its etch-less process

China-based microLED technology developer Qiushui Semiconductor has raised almost 200 million RMB (almost $30 million USD) in its Series-A funding round, led by Zhaohui Capital.

Qiushui has developed a unique microLED microdisplay production process, in which it creates an electrically insulating wall between pixels on the epiwafer, and so does not need to utilize etching to singulate the microLEDs. . The company says that avoids the sidewall damages and thus enables higher efficiency microLEDs.

Aledia and AUO to co-develop 3D Nanowire based microLED displays and optical I/O solutions

Aledia and AUO Corporation announced a strategic partnership to co-develop microLED display technologies. The two companies will develop microLED displays based on Aledia's 3D-Nanowire microLEDs and AUO's display backplanes.

Aledia and AUO has launched a project that received funds the France-Taiwan cooperation funding program. Beyond displays, this technology may also be used to optical I/O solutions and microLED microdisplays for AR devices. The partnership was formally announced last month in Paris.

Hexagem raises 3.4 million Euro in its late seed financing round

Sweden-based microLED developer Hexagem announced that it has raised 3.4 million Euro in a late seed funding. The round was led by Almi Invest and LMK Forward, with participation from the European Innovation Council Fund, Almi Invest Greentech, and S-E-Bankens Utvecklingsstiftelse.

The company says that the funds will be used to advance its 200mm wafer-scale development, expand partner-led device integration and accelerate commercial pathways for the company’s breakthrough microLED materials platform.

Crystal Matrix to establish a $336 million USD microLED epiwafer and module production line in Gujarat, India

Last year we reported that India's Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) is considering supporting the construction of a microLED production line in India, or to support the establishment of a supply chain for microLED development and production.

Yesterday the Indian government has approved a new project in Gujarat, by Crystal Matrix Limited, to establish a microLED and mini-LED production facility. The new fab, to be located in Dholera, Gujarat, will produce 6-inch GaN microLED and miniLED wafers, and will also produce mini-LED and micro-LED displays. The project's total cost is estimated at 3200 Cr INR (or about $336 million USD).

PlayNitride reports its financial results for Q1 2026, cancels $31 million expansion plan, opens Singapore subsidiary

Taiwan-based MicroLED developer PlayNitride announced its financial results for Q1 2026, with 135.8 million NTD ($4.3 million USD) in revenues, down from 300 million NTD last year. The company's net loss reached 251.8 million NTD (almost $8 million), up from a loss of 51.5 million NTD last year.

A few days ago, PlayNitride also announced that its China-based subsidiary PlayNitride Kunshan has cancelled its plans to buy new microLED mass transfer equipment from Suzhou-based Yuzhu Semiconductor. The original deal (signed in February 2026) was worth $31.3 million. Yuzhu Semi will refund all payments made by PlayNitride and will not claim and compensation or restitution.

Palomino Laboratories raises $15 million to develop its microLED-based optical I/O transceiver platform

US-based Palomino Laboratories announced that it has raised $15 million in a private placement offering. Following a merger with Unite Acquisition, the company is public (OTCQB: PALX).

Palomino Labs develops a GaN microLED-based optical transceiver platform for AI data center communication for high-speed, energy-efficient data transfer. Palomino has the right to use and license the University of California, Santa Barbara’s (UCSB) advanced microLED technology.

Kopin enter into a strategic agreement with Fabric.AI to develop microLED-based optical I/O technologies

Kopin Corporation announced a strategic collaboration with Fabric.AI to develop microLED-based optical interconnect technology for AI infrastructure.  Kopin says that Fabric.AI placed a $15 million purchase order with Kopin to fund the demonstration chipset development.

Kopin and Fabric.AI jointly are jointly developing an optical interconnect technology (branded as Neural I/o) designed to replace traditional copper wiring between GPUs and high-performance processors in data centers. The technology leverages Kopin's microLED displays and bi-directional NeuralDisplay architecture, repurposing programmable microLED pixels as optical transceivers for data transmission.

Seoul Semiconductor approved a plan to invest $180 million in microLED microdisplays for AR

LED developer Seoul Semiconductor has entered in a government-approved restructuring plan, as its traditional LED package market is suffering from reduced prices and profitability.

Seoul Semiconductor has decided to direct 250 billion Won ($180 million USD) investment in the next 5 years, mostly into the R&D and manufacturing of microLED microdisplay modules, for AR applications. The US blocks San'an Optoelectronics' $239 million Lumileds acquisition, due to national security concerns

In August 2025, China-based San’an Optoelectronics announced that it is set to acquire Netherlands-based LED producer Lumileds, for $239 million in cash. This acquisition was terminated today, after the US Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) did not approve the transaction due to 'national security concerns'.

Lumileds was originally a joint-venture between Philips and Agilent aimed to develop and produce LED lighting solutions mainly for the automotive industry and architectural lighting. Lumiled's revenues were around $600 million in 2024. The company is the world's third largest automotive LED maker, behind ams OSRAM and Nichia. It was to be a strategic acquisition for San'an.
