Samsung demonstrates a 140-inch tiled microLED TV with microLED-powered Mirror Bezels

Samsung is demonstrating a new 140-inch microLED tiled TV, in which the display continues on its edges. Samsung calls this technology a Mirror Bezel, although this is a bit misleading as the edge is a full display and not just a mirror.

The idea is that the microLED display continues on the edge of the display, and can display extra information, or extend the image, or just provide ambient lighting (similar to Philips' Ambilight).

While this is an interesting idea, it is important to remember that the fact that microLED TVs still have such a depth profile (around 40 mm it seems in this case), is a big disadvantage, and I would assume most consumers would rather have the thin profile OLEDs can provide (LG's latest W6 OLED TV is 9 mm thick).

It is likely that microLEDs could be thinner in the future - in fact likely even thinner than OLEDs as they do not require any encapsulation. Until then, it is a nice idea by Samsung to turn this disadvantage into a nice feature.
