Kopin wins order to supply microLED displays for aircraft HUDs, marking the first production order for microLEDs in combat aircraft

Kopin announced that a tier-one aerospace company has placed orders worth about $3 million for microLED displays. Kopin says that this will be the first production order for microLEDs in combat aircraft.

Kopin says it will deliver the dispalys in the second half of 2026. The microLEDs will upgrade legacy Heads-Up Displays (HUDs) in fielded aircraft. Kopin says that these microLED displays will offer high-resolution imagery projected onto a screen directly in the line of sight, enhancing situational awareness, safety and mission effectiveness.

Kopin's microLED displays offer up to 1 million foot lambert (fL) brightness, about 100 times brighter than OLED displays. The displays offer a resolution of 4 megapixel resolution (likely 2560x1440) and support up to 120 fps.

Last month Kopin announced that it will raise $41 million in a private investment in public equity financing, and the funds will be used to develop several new product lines and technologies, including its color microLED microdisplays.

Earlier in September, Kopin was awarded $15.4 million from the US Department of Defense to develop ultra-bright, full-color MicroLED displays for military AR applications. Last month Theon announced that it is investing $15 million in Kopin, and the two companies have launched a Joint Venture that will engage in the development and production of microLED displays.
