AUO shows its latest microLED displays at Display Week 2023

AUO has demonstrated its latest microLED displays at Display Week 2023. Most of these displays have been shown before, but this was an impressive lineup for the Taiwanese display maker, and we'll detail the displays below.

So first up we have the 13.5" 1920x1080 (163 PPI) transparent microLEDs, which AUO says is the highest-resolution transparent microLED display ever demonstrated. The display offers a transparency of 55% and a high brightness of 5,000 nits. The microLEDs used in this display are 30 micron in size.

The second display is a 17.3" laptop panel, that includes a switchable black background (an LCD panel) - the idea is that users can switch between a transparent see-through display to a normal display. The display offers a brightness of 1,000 nits and a transparency of 45% in transparent mode, and under 2.5% in black mode.

AUO also showed its 14.5" 1000 nits 2560x1440 (202 PPI) foldable microLED display, featuring an ultra-thin glass panel that can fold with a bending radius of 4 mm. The display uses blue microLEDs (30 micron) and QD color conversion.

Another display on show was AUO's A.R.T. MicroLED, which stands for Advanced Reflectionless Technology, which reduces reflections while maintaining a high contrast and a large color gamut. The A.R.T. MicroLED was 17.3" in size and it offered a 1280x720 resolution, 3000 nits of brightness, and low reflectance (under 2.5%). The flip-chip LEDs are 40 micron in size.

AUO is also showing a 16.1" automotive transparent microLED that is a 'blended' display - one that is hidden into the dashboard when not in use. The company also showed a transparent panel that is coupled with an LCD display to offer a 3D display configuration.

Last month AUO announced that it has finalized the development of its wearable microLED display, and the company is now launching a 1.39" round smartwatch display commercially, with mass production expected in the second half of 2023. During Display Week the company demonstrated a new round display, this one smaller at 1-inch. The 1-inch display, aimed towards automotive applications and it includes a fingerprint sensor so that it can identify the user that uses it. The pixel density is 200 PPI, the LEDs are 30 micron in size and the brightness is 1,000 nits.

Last month the company also announced that it plans to convert its LCD 5A fab in Taiwan's Longtan District into a microLED production line. The new line will begin microLED production in 2025 or 2026, targeting wearable displays, automotive displays, TVs and signage displays.

AUO also developed 60" Full-HD tiled display that reaches a peak brightness of over 1,000 nits. The same display reaches a 4K resolution at 108".  The company did not show its tiled screens at Display Week.
