Google to launch monocular microLED-powered AI AR glasses in 2026

According to reports, Google is planning to release two new AI AR glasses in 2026, one model without a display, and the second one offering a monocular microLED-powered display.

According to the information available, Google is aiming at a simple, minimalistic device, that will be able to provide notifications, small information displays, and provide functionality similar to a smart watch. The company plans to later (perhaps in 2027) release a binocular version.

In 2022, Google acquired US-based microLED microdisplay developer Raxium. The company has since continued the development of these microdisplays, and in December 2024 Google demonstrated its latest Project Astra AR headset, powered by Raxium microdisplays.

It is not clear whether Google plans to produce these displays in house (unlikely), or whether a 3rd-party foundry will be used to produce the displays. It is also possible that Google will eventually opt on a microLED display produced by an existing microLED manufacturer like JBD, rather than utilizing its in-house Raxium displays or technologies.
