DELO Adhesives

Last year, we posted that adhesive developer and MicroLED Association member DELO has conducted in-house feasibility studies, that shows that their directional conductive adhesives can be used to replace soldering in miniLED, and microLED displays. The bonding was found to be reliable with high yields.

DELO has continued its miniLED project, and has now announced that it has examined their durability over extended test periods. The company says that it has shown that directional conductive adhesives are not only technically feasible for miniLEDs but also reliable in long-term conditions that realistically reflect industrial environments. The company believes that adhesives could play a role in microLED display production as well.

MicroLED Connect, our hybrid event series focusing on the microLED industry, will be hosting a two-day virtual event focused on MicroLED and AR/VR innovations, technologies, manufacturing, markets and more. Adhesive developer and MicroLED Association member DELO has conducted in-house feasibility studies, that shows that their directional conductive adhesives can be used to replace soldering in miniLED, and microLED displays. The bonding was found to be reliable with high yields.

DELO says that current microLED displays use solder materials to interconnect the LEDs to the display backplane. But as chip size gets smaller, isotopic conductive materials (like solder) is not reliable as it is difficult to avoid short circuits, and so production yields suffer.

MicroLED Connect is a global forum for microLED and related technologies and applications, which will take place at the Convention Center on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven on 25-26 September. The MicroLED Connect is organized by two industry veterans, Metalgrass’ Ron Mertens and TechBlick’s Khasha Ghaffarzadeh, each bringing his unique knowledge and experience to plan this extraordinary event.

We had a few questions to ask Khasha Ghaffarzadeh, our co-organizer, about his vision for this conference.

Q. Hi Kasha! We'd love to hear your thoughts on the MicroLED Connect event - what did you have in mind when planning it and what’s special about it? 

Hi! Well, it is the first worldwide onsite conference and exhibition dedicated to MicroLED technology. Up until now, MicroLEDs were highlighted in other display events, but never as the main technology in a dedicated conference. We felt that this emerging technology deserves to be the main focus. The event will bring together the entire value chain from around the world- from material suppliers to equipment makers to display makers and semiconductor companies and final OEMs. There is enormous interest in this technology and in our event, and so we expect a sell-out crowd.  

When planning this event, we put extra emphasis on social events and networking opportunities. We have a rich agenda that transcends the usual talks and lectures, and includes social gatherings, organized visits to companies in the area and more. We wish to give attendees the chance to not only listen and learn, but also interact and connect. We put a strong focus on in-person experience, hoping to forge deep partnerships amongst our participants. That’s actually where the name “MicroLED Connect” comes from!

Can you introduce your company and technology?

Dr. Tim Cloppenborg, senior project manager: DELO is a leading manufacturer of high-tech adhesives and other multifunctional materials as well as adhesive dispensing and curing technology. Our products are mainly used in the automotive, consumer electronics, and semiconductor industries. They can be found in almost every mobile phone and in most cars worldwide, for example in cameras, loudspeakers, electric motors, or sensors. DELO's headquarters are in Windach, Germany, near Munich, with subsidiaries in China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and USA, as well as representative offices and distributors in numerous other countries. We employ a workforce of 1,000 staff and achieved a turnover of almost €205 million in the last fiscal year. Our customers include Bosch, Huawei, Mercedes-Benz, Osram, Siemens, and Sony. As an innovative company, we always work ahead of the curve and pursue upcoming trends proactively.
