Westlake Smokey Mountain Technology starts operating its 8-inch GaN-On-Silicon microLED microdisplay fab

Westlake Smokey Mountain Technology (Yanshan Technology) has officially started operating its 8-inch GaN-on-Silicon microLED microdisplay production line, in Deqing, Zhejing, China. The company says this is the world's first 8-inch silicon microLED fab in operation.

The WSMT fab i s a full process line, that includes all steps from microLED epiwafer deposition to full display packaging. It currently operates on a small scale, but when fully operational it will have the annual capacity to produce 3 million microLED devices.

Polar Light Technologies to setup a pilot line at VTT

Polar Light Technologies announced that it has signed its first Pilot Line agreement with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. 

Polar Light has already begun its process flow transfer from the laboratory to VTT's Pilot Line. The Pilot Line will cover the full manufacturing flow required for Polar Light's first microLED product, which will help the company to accelerate the validation, scaling and product readiness.

Aledia and AUO to co-develop 3D Nanowire based microLED displays and optical I/O solutions

Aledia and AUO Corporation announced a strategic partnership to co-develop microLED display technologies. The two companies will develop microLED displays based on Aledia's 3D-Nanowire microLEDs and AUO's display backplanes.

Aledia and AUO has launched a project that received funds the France-Taiwan cooperation funding program. Beyond displays, this technology may also be used to optical I/O solutions and microLED microdisplays for AR devices. The partnership was formally announced last month in Paris.

Ingantec licenses strain-relaxed InGaN technology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison

US-based Ingantec announced an exclusive licensing agreement with the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), for its patents in advanced strain engineering and the utilization of pseudo-substrates—technologies.

Ingantec says that the licensed IP, developed by University of Wisconsin-Madison Professors Shubhra Pasayat and Chirag Gupta, utilizes porosification and electrochemical etching techniques to create strain-relaxed Indium Gallium Nitride (InGaN) templates. Inagntec says that these methods may hold promises for solving the “green gap” problem —the precipitous drop in efficiency as InGaN based microLEDs move from blue to green and red.

Fabric.AI plans to demonstrate its microLED-based optical I/O platform by the end of 2026

Last month, we reported that Kopin and Fabric.AI launched a strategic collaboration to develop microLED-based optical interconnect technology (which will branded as Neural I/o) for AI infrastructure. Fabric.AI placed a $15 million purchase order with Kopin to fund the demonstration chipset development.

Fabric.AI now announced that it expects to demonstrate its Neural I/o platform by the end of 2026. It has also entered into two non-disclosure agreements with leading chipmakers to discuss potential applications and integration opportunities for Neural I/o within next-generation AI systems.

Samsung installs a 19.35 meter microLED Wall display at Malaysia's Iskandar Puteri command center

Samsung Malaysia has installed a 19.35 x 2.7 meters microLED The Wall display, at the Iskandar Puteri Command and Control Centre (IPCCC). 

This large visual system is designed to enhance real-time smart city monitoring, coordination and response. Located in Johor, IPCCC functions as a centralised operations hub, where authorities manage real-time security surveillance, traffic management, environmental monitoring and coordinated incident responses.
