Alibaba launches its first AI Smart Glasses, based on JBD's green microLED microdisplays

Alibaba unveiled its first AI Smart Glasses, called the Quark AI. These glasses will be based on the company's own Qweb AI platform, and will feature a voice assistant, full voice control, a front camera and a QR payment system.

The Quark AI will have two models: the basic one without a display, and a display powered one, that will feature a monochrome green microLED display. It is likely to be based on JBD's microdisplays (Alibaba is one of JBD's investors). Alibaba says that it will launch the Quark AI Glasses by the end of 2025.

Researchers suggest the optimal process conditions of LLO microLED transfer processes

Researchers from Fuzhou University, in collaboration with researchers from Sweden's Chalmers University of Technology, report on improvement in laser lift off (LLO) process for mass transfer of microLED chips, finding the optimal conditions for successful processes - both the LLO itself and the preparatory process.

The researchers started by studying current LLO processes, and identifying the issues of chip damage and missing LEDs during the laser transfer process. The researchers then analyzed the underlying causes of these problems, and continued to discover the optimal process conditions.

Westlake Smokey Mountain Technology raises $14 million

China-based microLED developer Westlake Smoky Mountains Technology has finalized its pre-A series funding round, raising almost 100 million Yuan (around $14 million USD). Several VCs participated in this round, including Shenzhen Capital Group (SCGC), Ivy Capital, Moganshan Fund, and Lenovo Capital & Incubator Group.

WSMT developed a vertically stacked microLED architecture, targeting both microdisplays and direct-view displays. The technology originates from Hangzhou's Westlake University. The company is building a small-scale epiwafer production line in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, and aims to start production by the end of 2025.

Q-Pixel unveils a new microLED mass transfer technology

Q-Pixel launches a microLED mass transfer technology, which it brands as Q-Transfer. The company did not detail the technology itself, but says that it improves the transfer yield, while maintaining high resolution and superb alignment accuracy.

Q-Pixel demonstrated its transfer technology, and produced a microLED display based on 10 micron LEDs, and that has a pixel density of 500 PPI. The production yield is over 99.9995%.

Mass transfer – lasers, fluids and chip-first processing

The first theme we will discuss is mass transfer. In most MicroLED production platforms, there is at least one transfer process – from epiwafer to final display, and usually at least two such processes are involved: from epiwafer to an interposer substrate (temporary holder)  and then from interposer to final display. Performing this transfer in a cost-efficient and reliable manner is still one of the major challenges the industry is facing.

The MicroLED Industry Association (MIA) welcomes its newest member companies - Plessey Semiconductors, UBI Research and Polar Light Technologies. The MIA aims to accelerate the adoption of microLED display technologies, bringing together companies, researchers and organizations active in the MicroLED industry and providing an ideal forum for solving common technology issues, fostering cooperation and sharing relevant information, resources and tools.

Korea to invest $350 million to assist its local industry in developing microLED capabilities

The government of South Korea, via its Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, announced a plan to invest 484 billion Won (around $350 million USD) in microLED display technology.

The investment plan, that will run through 2032, aims to assist Korea's local display industry in its transition from current OLED technologies to microLED and quantum dots technologies. The government hopes that this will assit in creating a complete supply chain for microLED technologies in Korea - including locally made epiwafers, chips and materials.

Beneq says it is seeing significant progress in the microLED industry, with repeat orders for its ALD systems

Beneq announced that it is seeing significant progress in the microLED display market, and has received repeat orders from microLED technology developers. 

The company says that its top-tier customers rely on ALD technology to advance monolithic integration of microLEDs and driver electronics on a single chip - likely they mean microLEDs microdisplays for AR applications.
