Saphlux launches a 0.13-inch full color microLED microdisplay based on its new T3 platform, is developing AR glasses together with Leyard

Saphlux launched its latest OLED microdisplay technology, its T3 Series. The company unveiled a 0.13" 320x240 (subpixel pitch of 4 micron) monolithic full-color microLED microdisplay, based on its proprietary NPQD (Nanopore Quantum Dot) technology. 

Saphlux says that the new display offers high luminous efficiency, compact size, and superior reliability, and is an improvement over its previous generation technology. In addition to the new display, Saphlux say that it is collaborating with Leyard to develop an AR glasses product based on the T1-0.13” monochrome display, with plans to release a new generation of AR glasses equipped with the T3-0.13” full-color display by the end of 2025.

Nothing Phone to use a small microLED Glyph Matrix display on the back of their upcoming smartphone

Smartphone designer Nothing says that its upcoming new smartphone, the Nothing Phone (3), will adopt a unique circular dot-matrix display on the back side. The company refers to this display as the Glyph Matrix, which will enable people to express themselves and it can also show "subtle notifications, visual cues, and interactive feedback".

Nothing says that this LED display is powered by microLED devices. From the images it seems as these LEDs are quite big and not in the microLED range, but we will hopefully learn more soon.

Yicai Core Light to soon start pilot production of its PeQD-based microLED microdisplays

China-based Yicai Core Light (also known as Yicai Xinguang Technology) says that it is preparing to start producing its microLED microdisplays in the autumn of 2025, in a pilot production line that will be build with help from Ningbo-based Yongjiang Laboratory.

Yicai's microLED platform is based on blue microLEDs and QD color conversion. Interestingly, the company uses perovskite-based quantum dots, saying that these cadmium-free QDs deliver increased performance. Yicai is partnering with application developers including both TCL and Meizu.

XDC developed the world's fastest display, says could create highly efficiency communication links

MicroLED technologies developer X Display Company (XDC) announced that it has developed the world's fastest display based on its microLED platform, with a data rate of a million frames per second. 

XDC says that such a display could lay the foundation for next-generation free-space optical wireless communication systems. The basic idea is to pair a display such as this with a camera setup to create a cable-free, reconfigurable and energy-efficient display-camera communication link.

Researchers develop a novel high-throughput and non-destructive microLED EL measurement technology

Researchers from China's Tianjin University has developed a high throughput and non-destructive EL measurement method for microLED chips. The researchers say that this new method is not only non-destructive, it also extends the lifetime of the probe significantly (to over a million contact cycles) compared to other methods.

The new method is based on a flexible three-dimensional probe array that is capable of adapting to the microscopic contours of micro-LED wafers. The total pressure applied on the LEDs is only 0.9 megapascals (said to be comparable to a gentle breath). The probe head has 32 × 32 pairs of probes that can simultaneously measure 1,024 microscale LEDs using a passive-matrix driving approach in half a second.

Samsung to start trial production of its 115" RGB microLED backlit LCD TV soon

During CES 2025, Samsung Electronics demonstrated a 98-inch 8K microLED-backlit LCD TV, branding it as RGB MicroLED TV. This is not a true microLED TV, as it is not emissive, but unlike other LED- and miniLED- backlit LCDs, this one uses smaller red, green and blue microLEDs. A few weeks ago Samsung announced plans to produce this TV commercially by the end of 2025.

According to a new report in Korea, Samsung is now ready to begin trial production of this new TV type. Apparently the company's production process has matured enough and it is progressing as planned.

The MicroLED Industry Association publishes a MicroLED Efficiency White Paper

The MicroLED Industry Association published a new white paper that provides a discussion on microLED device efficiency. It focuses on the LED device itself, and does not discuss the efficiency of backplanes, added layers or the complete display system. The main goal is to help those that seek to use microLED devices understand what kind of performance can be expected of the microLEDs. The open summary edition can be downloaded here.

MicroLED Industry Association members can access the full document, which includes an in-depth discussion into device and usage efficiency aspects, sidewall defects, LED design, EQE of standard and state-of-the-art LED devices, color conversion, and more.

JBD confirms it is the microLED panel supplier for the TCL RayNeo X3 Pro, which also uses the company's image-quality engine

Earlier this year, TCL launched its RayNeo X3 Pro, powered by full color microLED displays, and a few days ago we posted that these are now shipping for around $1,050 with subsidies. The X3 Pro has an ultra-compact 2,500 nits full-color microLED display engine, based on 3 monochrome microLED panels. 

We assumed that these microLEDs are produced by JBD, and the company indeed confirmed that today. JBD also revealed that this is the first time that its proprietary, system-level image-quality engine for waveguide AR glasses (branded as ARTCs-WG) has been fully integrated into an AR product.
