A spotlight on Innovation Semiconductor: a MicroLED Industry Association member

We're happy to introduce Innovation Semiconductor, a US-based company that develops a patented monolithic vertical architecture for the production of MicroLED microdisplays, based on a 3D nanowire structure, a single material system and a straightforward and conventional integration between LEDs and GaN transistor. We’re excited to feature Matthew Hartensveld, PhD, CTO and co-founder of Innovation Semiconductor, specializing in GaN micro-LEDs, transistors, and semiconductor device innovation, who shares his insights and vision in this exclusive Q&A:

Can you introduce your company and technology?

Innovation Semiconductor is a startup dedicated to advancing monolithic solutions for microLED displays. We recognize that one of the main barriers to large-scale microLED production has been the difficulty of integrating separate components into a unified, scalable solution. As such this has been our focus, where we are pioneering LED-FET technologies pairing GaN MOSFETs with LEDs to address the issue of controlling logic, smarter flip-chip bonding with NMOS circuitry offered by independent cathodes, and color tunable LEDs to have a single LED act as a complete pixel emitting native color. Notably, each of these technologies can operate independently and are designed to be fabricated using only standard semiconductor toolsets, ensuring compatibility with existing manufacturing infrastructure.

JBD managed to dramatically increase its manufacturing quality, increasing yields and reducing defects

China-based MicroLED microdisplay developer Jade Bird Display announced that it has implemented new technologies that enabled it to reduce the average number of defective pixels in its microdisplays from around 100 to around 3 per panel. This increased the company's panel yields quite dramatically.

In addition to the improvement in defective pixels, the company also reduced the rate of its 'dark pixels' (which means pixels with reduced brightness) from around 0.4% a few years ago to only 0.03% today. This, in addition to the company's proprietary demura pixel-level luminance-compensation algorithm has greatly enhanced pixel-brightness uniformity.

The TCL RayNeo X3 Pro AR glasses are now shipping in China for $1,250

Earlier this year, TCL launched its RayNeo X3 Pro, powered by full color microLED displays. TCL now says that the glasses are available, in China only, with a recommended retail price of 8,999 yuan ( about $1,250). TCL says that with subsidies, the price comes down to 7,649 yuan (or around $1,050).

The new optical engine in the RayNeo X3 Pro is ultra compact - and is (according to TCL) the world's smallest "mass-producible" full-color micro-LED optical engine. It is based on three monochrome microLEDs and can deliver up to 2,500 nits of brightness. The microLEDs are likely supplied by JBD.

The MicroLED Industry Association to host a panel meeting on June to discuss red microLEDs

The MicroLED Industry Association will host an online meeting on June 16, 2025, with a focus on red microLED emission, one of the key challenges towards mass microLED adoption.

This first-of-its-kind panel meeting will take a deep look into red microLED emission. The several potential paths towards a commercial red microLED will be discussed: native GaN red, color conversion, color-tunable LEDs and 3D GaN Nanowires.

Researchers at CEA Leti integrate organic photodetectors within microLED displays

Researchers from France's CEA Leti have reported on the successful integration of organic photodetectors within microLED displays, to create a multifunctional display, that can combine imaging with gesture recognition, and even biometric scanning.

As microLEDs are extremely bright, it is possible to create displays with very high aperture ratio (compared to other displays such as LCDs and OLEDs) which frees up space on the display panel.

TCL CSoT shares more details on its microLED prototype displays shown at Displayweek 2025

Two days ago we reported that TCL CSoT demonstrated new microLED displays at Displayweek 2025, and now the company shared more details about all of the microLEDs it demonstrated.

So first up, we have the world's smallest microLED microdisplay- at just 0.05-inches. The display offers a resolution of 256x86 (5080 PPI), with a 5 micron pitch. The display is a monochrome green color, with a brightness that exceeds 4 million nits. TCL says that the CMOS backplane is highly efficient, and the total power consumption of the display is below 10 mW.

Nanolumens to unveil a transparent microLED display next month, developed in collaboration with AUO

Earlier this month, LED screen designer and producer Nanolumens announces a strategic partnership with AUO Display Plus, to co-develop microLED large-format displays. Now the two companies announced that next month at InfoComm 2025 they will demonstrate the first commercial display developed as part of this partnership

A 60" transparent microLED display, AUO (2024)

The display, called the SeeThrµ Transparent MicroLED Display is a transparent microLED display that offers up to 60% transparency. There are no more details available, but if this will be based on AUO's 60-inch transparent microLED display, it will feature a 1920x1080 resolution and up to 600 nits of brightness.
