TCL CSoT shows new flexible, wearable microLED display prototypes

TCL's CSoT showed its latest display prototypes at the company's DTC 2021 event. CSoT unveiled two new microLED display prototypes, that it never displayed before.

The first display is a small 1.37" 320x360 (353 PPI) wearable LTPS microLED display, that achieves a brightness of >2,000 nits. The display also uses TDDI touch technology (in which a single chip shares the display driver and the touch sensor).

DSCC: the microLED display market is set to grow to $1 billion by 2026

DSCC estimates that the MicroLED display market will grow to from $103 million in 2022 to $1 billion by 2026. MicroLED will be adopted by three major applications, TVs, Wearables and AR/VR devices.

DSCC sees MicroLED devices being chosen mostly due to the higher efficiency, brightness, response time - and the longer lifetime compared to OLED devices. The high cost of production remains a challenge, though.

Samsung Electronics scraps its plans to release 77-inch microLED TVs in 2022

Towards the end of 2020, Samsung announced it's first "consumer" 110-inch 4K MicroLED TV, and then in early 2021 it said it will release smaller microLED TVs, including 77" and 88" models.

According to a new report from Korea, Samsung Electronics canceled its plans to release these smaller microLED TVs, as the company could not reduce prices enough and the asking price for a 77" microLED would not be attractive to customers.

ams Osram: microLED is one of our key initiatives, but the market is a few years away

In a recent conference call, Alexander Everke, the CEO at LED and sensor developer ams Osram, remarked that microLED is one of the company's key initiatives.

The microLED market, according to Everke, is "clearly a few years away", but the company plans to invest in the technology to make sure it stays ahead of the curve, as it wants to position itselff as the clear microLED leader.
