iBeam Materials' founder gives us the latest updates and his views on the microLED industry, towards his upcoming talk at MicroLED-Connect

US-based iBeam Materials develops a technology that uses ion-beam to grow microLED devices on a variety of large-area substrates, including thin, flexible large-area metal foils. iBeam's founder and president, Vladimir Matias, will give a talk at the upcoming MicroLED-Connect startup showcase event on February 2024, and he was kind enough to send us a short update on the company's technology and status, and his views on the microLED industry and market.

Hello Vladimir, thank you for your time. Can you tell us a bit about iBeam, your technology and current status?

iBeam Materials is an early stage technology company developing a revolutionary approach to the epitaxial semiconductor growth process required for making LEDs and microLEDs such as in the next generation of displays. Instead of GaN crystal growth on expensive, rigid single crystal substrates that are limited in size, iBeam technology allows growth of the same high-quality semiconductor material on large-area, low-cost metal foil that permits roll-to-roll processing due to its flexibility.

Continental shows a 10" microLED automotive display embedded in a crystal housing

Continental demonstrated its first microLED automotive display prototype. The so-called CrystalCenter Display is based on a 10" microLED display (we do not know the actual display producer), that is housed inside a crystal housing, developed in collaboration with Swarovski. The company says that this display offers a stylish frameless and semi-transparent look.

Continental says it chose a microLED display for this project, as its offers much greater brightness compared to other display technologies. Continental did not detail any commercialization plans for such a display - and it's likely that there are no such plans in the near future.

Raysolve shows new microLED microdisplay prototypes at CES 2024

Hong Kong based microLED microdisplay developer Raysolve Technology demonstrated two new microLED microdisplay prototypes, 0.11" (320x240) and 0.22" full color displays. The displays feature a density of 7,200 PPI and a brightness of up to 150,000 nits (full color).

The displays are based on blue LEDs, with the company's proprietary Quantum dot photoresist (QDPR) process. Raysolve says it has optimized its QD process and increase the color gamut of its displays - which now achieve 147.2% sRGB, 104.3% NTSC and 108.5% DCI-P3.

TCL shows a tiled 163" microLED display prototype

TCL has demonstrated a 163" microLED TV display prototype. This seems to be the same display showed at IFA 2023 last year.

We do not have any more technical details. In May 2023, TCL unveiled a small tiled display (18.8"), this could be based on the same tiles. The 2023 display featured a pixel-pitch of 0.43 mm, an IGZO backplane and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. CSoT says that the LED chips have an area of 400 squm, which means chip size of about 20 microns.
